Message From LRC President Steve “Hank” Hanken
– We have had great success (thanks Julie), recruiting volunteers to help at our races, including the upcoming Mayfaire. This year’s Mayfaire race could be the biggest and best. Rich Wills, race director, is doing a great job organizing and promoting the event. I look forward to seeing club members at Mayfaire and again at the YMCA Corporate Cup on May 17th. The Y has been a huge supporter of the Runners Club for years, so let’s have a great turnout and help support those who help support our mission.

April LRC- Board Meeting Notes

Updates on the RRCA Convention 2010, to be held here in Lakeland, were provided by Polk Sports Marketing representative, Dawn Decaminada.

Nick Sudzina is contacting Susan Hammerling, the race director for Gasparilla, to possibly speak at our LRC meeting in May or June.

MAYFAIRE The Board discussed the idea of having a hospitality tent for Mayfaire 2009. Proposal to boost membership by offering those who join the Club at Mayfaire to have a complimentary entry in Lake to Lake plus the opportunity to participate in a six week training program led by Dave Quarles. This was approved by Board.

The Board approved the purchase of four walkie talkies for management of future races. The purchase will be made by Rich Wills with the Club to reimburse him for the purchase.

Chris English updated the Board on automated email renewal requests and will continue to maintain same through Abooma. Rich Wills suggests possibility of umbrella memberships for students of Southeastern College, etc.

Julie Landrigan addressed Board with the results of her research on timing system options and recommended that based upon her research that the Club not purchase a timing system at the present time and that the Board instead determine how race management companies may fill the timing needs of the Club. The Board approved this recommendation.

LRC Meeting, April 10 at the YMCA

Milton Lyons, our 2008 club vice president and employee of Fitniche, talked about new technological offerings for runners. After talking about Swiss watches and digital watches, he got into current runner offerings.

“IPod partnered with Nike and came up with the IPlus shoe,” Milton said. “It’s a Nano.”

This little gadget will plug into a Nano in which you provide your height and weight. From that information, it will calculate your calories burned, distance run, average speed, and your fastest time.

When plugged into a computer to charge it, it will go to the Nike Plus website and log it.

“This isn’t perfectly accurate,” Milton continued. “If you want accuracy, there’s the Garmen, a GPS unit. But there are pros and cons to all of this technology. The GPS only down side is if you go into a wooded area, it will lose it’s signal.

“To resolve that issue, you have the Polar Foot Pod. All these items store your runs.

“But the newest thing that has come out is from Timex. It literally allows you to control your music with the watch.

“Now we get to the really expensive stuff,” Milton said. “What Mallory White is currently sleeping in is a Colorado Altitude Training Approxy Chamber. It builds your lung capacity in two or three months.

“The next thing is the Utra G Trainer Treadmill. You have a belt around your waist and you’re in a bubble, but you’re still running. It gives you a low-impact workout. It costs about $75,000.

Milton talked about a few other gadets and a website, coolrunnings.com. But you can get more details at Fitnitche.

Member Profile – Bobbie Drelick

Years Running – 3 years and 5 months.

Personal Bests – 1 mile, 7:00; 5K, 23:24 at the Bill Duncan Memorial Run; 10K, 54:03 at the Race For The Taste, Oct. 7, 2007; 15K, 1:18:16 at Gasparilla ‘08.

Favorite Race – “I loved Gasparilla,” she said. “I guess it was because of all the people that were there. And they had the musicians every few miles. It was exciting and there was a big party after. I just thought it was so much fun. I wish there were more big races and longer races in Lakeland.

“I really enjoyed running longer. I would love to do that Minnie Marathon that’s coming up at Disney. But it’s expensive. I have to save up the money.”

Why Did You Start Running - “I wanted to lose weight,” she said. “Once I saw the weight starting to come off, running started being more fun. It just got better and better. Then I started getting a little bit competitive. I wanted to get a trophy. I wanted to get third place. Then, when I started getting third place, I wanted second place. Now I’m all about who’s in my age group, who do I have to beat today. Most of the time I come in second. But there are a few times I’ve been first. And I’ve met a lot of new friends running down at the lake.”

What Keeps You Running: “I get cranky if I don’t run,” Bobbi said. “If I don’t run every day, I get in a bad mood. If I don’t get my run in, I have a bad attitude towards the day.

“I’m running at least six miles a day. I run with Michelle Lapointe and our normal run is about nine miles. Sometimes we get too busy and we just do six. If I only do three, I’ll still be in a bad mood.”

Carter Road Clean Up

About a dozen LRC members turned out for the trail clean-up effort at Loyce Harper Park, formerly Carter Road Park, on April 12. Following a spirited and challenging run of about 5K along the yellow trail, members broke up into teams and headed out to gather trash.

No prizes were awarded, but a couple of tires, a muffler, lots of beer bottles, and an actual fork in the road (plastic) were found during the 2-hour hunt.

Plans for a race or fun run along the trail were talked afterwards, while consuming very welcome water and home-baked cookies.
